Let it not be another non performing asset

Morung Express News Dimapur | June 4

An ice plant-cum-cold storage was inaugurated at the Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources’ Brooder Fish Farm in Dimapur on June 4.

According to the Fisheries’ Department, the project was funded under “negotiated loan” from the NABARD during 2020-21 at a cost of “Rs Rs 146.85 lakhs as NABARD share,” while the state share of 5 percent was still pending.

Nevertheless, the ice plant and the cold storage, with a capacity of 3 metric tonnes each, were commissioned earlier in the month of March, targeting to serve the requirements of fish traders based in Kohima, Chümoukedima, Niuland and Dimapur.

The Department added that the ice plant came equipped with a treatment unit for removing iron and arsenic from the water used for ice production. The technology used for the plant was said to be ozone-friendly unlike older versions, while it added that uninterrupted power supply of 20-24 hours is required to form the ice blocks.

L Khumo, Advisor for Fisheries, who inaugurated the plant, emphasised the importance of sustaining the longevity of public assets. In this aspect, he said that the role of field workers is crucial. “Don’t let the machine inaugurated today remain idle. It would be a shame to let it turn into a non performing asset.”

“This is not only for the Department; it is for the growth of the Nagas. We may get all the funding but without active work on the ground, it would come to naught. As employees, take ownership of the department. Don’t take it as only a means of employment to get salary,” he said.

Emphasising the economic potential of fish farming, he recalled the story of a paddy farmer in Phek, who successfully transitioned to fish farming through assistance and expert guidance from the Department.
